The Republic's Control

In dystopian societies, people are not living in the way we, in our society, are accustomed to do. They neither have the possibility to think nor to act by themselves; therefore, all their opportunities are restricted to what others say. Freedom is the most appreciated value in this kind of societies, thus it is the first right that people lose.

In this societies there is a combination of different aspects that are manipulated; there are ones that are visible, like the changes on the order of social classes, where men have the control of the economic power, what in Gilead means the control of government, business, war, women, and private life; and women are only objects and wombs. However, not all men, and all women were treated equally, they were divided into classes with different colors, in order to create a fake order.  And also, there are the invisible variables, which are concerned in shaping people’s mind.

If one think about women, the main point here is the absence of love; Handmaids were not allowed to love, feel or touch someone else without permission; they just had to accepted. As the way Wives had to accept the fact that they could never be pregnant.

 Questioning mean thinking, and thinking is a dangerous artifact. Because thinking was banned, daily conversations should be trivial, not revealing the real thoughts, for this reason handmaids greeted with non sense phrases that should mean something for them, but at the same time making differences with the other members of society.
